А, я не поняла эту фразу. Понятно, что РБК лишнего хватили, какое там "увязнуть", но я бы подумала, что это значит что-то вроде "полюбить демократию", "поддаться демократии"

Я обсудил эту заметку с моим другом -- классический американец, как его представляет весь мир - белобрысый, толстомордый, толстый, предков за пару столетий набралось из Англии, Финляндии и Германии, зимой (правда, калифорнийской) ходит в шортах и футболке, на парти BBQ-юит свиные ребрышки с капустой и пьет пиво. При этом он закончил два университета, по первому образованию филолог-русист, круто работает в хай-тек, жена из Питера, по-русски болтает свободно (правда с небольшим "прибалтийским" акцентом, но точно лучше чем я по-английски
) умница и отличное чувство юмора.
Вот что он мне написал:
"Get squishy" is a pretty slang-y (and therefore vague) expression.
Squishy, as I assume you know, means soft and mushy, opposite of
tverdyi or
krepkii. Greek Yogurt and Chocolate Pudding are squishy. An octopus or jellyfish has a squishy body. The metaphorical expression means, essentially, to turn weak or inconsistent on some principle for which you have previously expressed support. For example, a candidate who runs on promises of gun control, then gets elected and fails to pass any gun control legislation, might be said to have gotten squishy on gun control. This is probably the sense Clinton is using - suggesting that Putin originally seemed firm on promising to democratize Russian society, then backed off that promise--lost his firmness, or went "squishy" on it. It is true that Americans broadly (including yours truly) originally had high expectations that Putin would move to democratize Russian politics, mostly because of his Western contacts, outwardly sophisticated demeanor, spoke German, etc. But in retrospect it looks like those expectations were too optimistic.
The Clinton quote reflects exactly that: at first it appeared that Putin was amenable to cooperation with Europe, political reform in Russia, liberalization, greater democracy; but on the other hand he might back off that direction and move toward traditional authoritarianism, i.e., get squishy on democracy. Deviate from democracy, as you put it. Definitely does not imply that he suspected that Putin was too democratic, or anything like that.”
